At age 28, she’s a veteran of the wallflower scene, having not secured a husband during her debutante years due to her father’s passing. The Viscount Who Loved Me introduces arguably one of the best heroines in all of author Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton universe, Kate Sheffield. At the root of things Bubba Ho-Tep is both a horror movie and a comedy. Those are all hallmarks of Lansdale’s writing.Īnd yet, I can’t help but feel that Bubba Ho-Tep isn’t the best introduction to Lansdale’s work. The characters are treated with respect and the story has moments of surprising tenderness. The depiction of East Texas is vivid, detailed and feels very familiar if you’ve spent any time in the region. It quickly became a cult classic.īubba Ho-Tep is profane, funny, absurd and genuinely scary. It was the type of beautifully strange movie that develops a community of appreciation. From day one – or middle-of-the-night one, rather – I found child-rearing fascinating. To tone down some of the horror, and distance Jack’s story from Felix’s, I made him a well-nourished only child, the captor a stranger rather than his ma’s father, their home a locked shed with a skylight and ventilation somewhere in the US.īut the novel really started years earlier, when I gave birth to the first of our two kids. ![]() By the time I parked, and grabbed a napkin to scribble down my thoughts, I knew my novel had to be from the child’s point of view, would begin on his fifth birthday and be split into two halves by the escape, and would be called (in an echo of womb) Room. I got the notion to write Room in 2008 when I was driving to a book event and mulling over a news story from a few days before about a five-year-old called Felix Fritzl, rescued from the Austrian dungeon where his mother had raised him and his siblings. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And every night, late at night, I turned the lock of his door and opened it – oh, so gently! I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him. You should have seen how wisely and carefully I went to work! Whenever it fell on me, my blood ran cold and so - very slowly - I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and free myself of the eye forever. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a bird, a vulture - a pale blue eye, with a film over it. It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain. How, then, am I mad? Observe how healthily - how calmly I can tell you the whole story. ![]() I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. True! Nervous - very, very nervous I had been and am!
